New Jersey U.S. Senate Campaign 2002
This page will be continuously updated to provide up-to-the-minute news on the Senate 2002 Campaign between Republican Douglas Forrester and Democrat challenger Frank Lautenberg. Doug has focused on the issues throughout this campaign, while Frank is only in the "protect" the endangered Democrat majority in the US Senate. Why are the Democrats in trouble? Because all internal Democrat polls taken while they were trying to choose a candidate showed all candidates 8-12 points behind Forrester. Stay tuned, this is going to be one hell of a stretch drive!

Republican Senatorial Candidate Douglas Forrester

Straight Talk From Doug Forrester:

PROTECTING OUR ENERGY SECURITY: ENERGY
We must meet our energy needs to maintain a healthy economy, increase our energy independence and protect our environment. Dwindling domestic resources, a surging dependency on foreign oil and environmental concerns all combine to make the need for putting partisan politics aside so we can come together and find innovative long term solutions. Simply put, America does not have sufficient energy supplies to grow our economy and provide national security. We are running near empty.
  Forrester's Views
Douglas Forrester is a fiscal conservative when it comes to dealing with your money. He's been the force behind the success of BeneCards Services, Inc., one of NJ's most successful small businesses. Doug will fight to lower your taxes, fight to lower your car insurance rates, and fight to save your pension funds. As a former University professor, Doug will make sure your child gets the best education possible. He will also ensure that America remains a free land to come to, but also ensure the safety of citizens living in this country. That's why he supports President Bush and Operation Enduring Freedom: The War on Terrorism. And, Doug will fight to pass the Social Security Guarantee Act so that you can retire and live the rest of your life comfortably.

Forrester focuses on new opponent
By MARK PERKISS

PRINCETON BOROUGH - Republican Douglas Forrester pumped the flesh and talked issues during an afternoon campaign swing through this university town yesterday as part of an effort to retool his U.S. Senate campaign to include a new opponent, former Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

During a news conference in Palmer Square, Forrester said he is unconcerned about having to face Lautenberg, who was selected by the Democratic State Committee after Sen. Robert Torricelli dropped out of the race on Monday because of continuing questions about his ethics.

"Mr. Lautenberg's voting record is even easier for me to run against than Bob Torricelli's," Forrester said. "He's very weak on national security, he voted to reduce defense budgets, he is against the death penalty and he spoke out against and opposed President Bush's tax cuts.

"We're going to have a lot to talk about if we find (ourselves) together on the ballot," he said.

Lawyers for Forrester were in Washington yesterday asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a state Supreme Court decision Wednesday that allowed Lautenberg to replace Torricelli as the Democratic candidate.

"I've been running since January, and I've had six opponents now," Forrester said, referring to the original GOP primary field. "It may well be that I'll have another one, a seventh, and if that happens, great. I figure that we're going to be successful in that endeavor too."

Forrester was state director of pensions under former Gov. Thomas H. Kean and served one term as a West Windsor township committeeman 20 years ago.

Forrester said he wants to debate Lautenberg and said the two should debate once a week from now until the Nov. 5 election. Shea said the campaign welcomes the chance to debate but questioned Forrester's sincerity, noting the Republican says he wants debates at the same time he is going to court and claiming Lautenberg is not a legitimate opponent and should be knocked off the ballot.

At his news conference, Forrester said Lautenberg is out of step with New Jersey voters. "He may have been in touch with New Jersey 20 years ago, but not now," Forrester said. Political observers and Republican strategists said Forrester needs to harshly challenge Lautenberg on a wide variety of issues.

"What Forrester needs to do is to use Lautenberg's own words and positions against him because a lot has changed since he left office two years ago," said Tom Wilson, a GOP strategist.

"Lautenberg will have to explain why he voted against the Gulf War and why he stood in opposition to ousting Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 1991," Wilson said. "If he was unwilling then, will he stand with America and the president now, or will he sympathize with Saddam Hussein?" -- -- -- Other strategists agreed, but questioned whether Forrester will be combative enough.

"They should be real aggressive and not rely on the courts," said one GOP insider who asked not to be identified.

"Take the fight to Lautenberg, debate him as soon as possible. Get in his face about how the Democratic machine did this end-run to get him on the ballot. Get Lautenberg on the record giving some mealy-mouth defense of it.

"I worry that Doug will be too passive. We've got the advantage. We should play like it's our race to lose."

Forrester yesterday indicated he will continue to tie Lautenberg to Torricelli. "Mr. Lautenberg is stepping into Mr. Torricelli's shoes, and he inherits all of the baggage that is there," he said. "The Torricelli-Lautenberg machine contrived for this switch of candidates to happen." Forrester campaign manager Bill Pascoe said that is a refrain that will be repeated often. "Mr. Lautenberg now has a new first name - Torricelli."

He said he and other campaign officials are determining which advertisements they have prepared can still be used with Torricelli out of the race. "Some we'll be able to change, but some we'll have to scrap," Pascoe said.

Torricelli-Lautenberg Machine Makes NJ Butt of National Jokes

"I'm confident the United States Supreme Court will reject Bob Torricelli's appeal."

--Democrat Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, roast for Tom Brokaw, October 2, 2002

"Bob Torricelli, a senator from New Jersey, dropped out of the New Jersey Senate race. Because he didn't think he had a chance of winning, he dropped out. But here's what's happening, he's moving to Florida, where he might accidentally get elected."

--David Letterman, "The Late Show," CBS, October 2, 2002

"New Jersey Senator Torricelli has dropped out of the Senate race. Torricelli said he couldn't run so he is stepping aside. Why don't the Jets do that? ... You really have to feel sorry for Torricelli. For the campaign, he had to use millions and millions of his own bribe money...

"Torricelli said he was dropping out because he was running a distant second [to rival Jay Leno]. Geeze, you don't see me doing that, do you?"

--David Letterman, "The Late Show," CBS, October 1, 2002

"The Democrats are trying to replace New Jersey Senator Robert Torricelli with former Senator Frank Lautenberg. Torricelli had to quit after he was criticized by his fellow senators for getting illegal campaign contributions. See, that's when you know you're corrupt -- [when] members of Congress like Gary Condit go, 'You should be ashamed of yourself.'"

--Jay Leno, "The Tonight Show," NBC, October 2, 2002
